Now that the dust has settled on the 2004 Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe, the staff at Live Arts and Fringe are hard at work on 2005.
If you are interested in being considered for the 2005 Live Arts Festival, please take a look at our page of
Live Arts guidelines. If you are interested in participating in the Fringe, take a look at our
Fringe guidelines.

Welcome, Artists! We are currently preparing for our 8th year: September 3-18, 2004.As many of you may already know, The Philadelphia Fringe Festival has changed its name to Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and the Philly Fringe. The festivals take place in Philadelphia concurrently over 16 days, with a strong emphasis on the performing arts.
In 1997, our first year, we created a festival that supported two internationally established presenting philosophies: the juried international contemporary arts festival model and the self-produced Fringe festival model. Every year we take steps to encourage each platform to grow and develop its own independent character and more easily engage in dialogue with its national and international counterparts. This year, instead of presenting both philosophies under the single name of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, we are thrilled to give each presenting philosophy its own name, in effect creating two Festivals.
For the contemporary arts festival, now called the
Philadelphia Live Arts Festival, we want to create an ongoing dialogue with artists who are creating provocative, challenging work that pushes the boundaries within their genres in which they are working.
There will be no application process, rather a targeted strategy of selection. The programming staff will be evaluating work, discussing projects and determining how each artists work fits into the specific goals of each Festival year.
To do this,
we need to know what you're working on now. Put us on your mailing lists, invite us to your shows, make sure that we're on your email lists and bring us in earlier in your process, perhaps invite us to a rehearsal and take a few moments now to
email us about your next project. If your proposed project seems to fit with the festival goals, then we will talk about an appropriate presenting platform. The majority of the 2004 Live Arts Festival has been programmed. And we have already begun crafting the 2005 Festival.

The self-producing part of the festival, previously called the Unfiltered Fringe, BYOV, and the Fringe of the Fringe will now take the name the
Philly Fringe . It works with the same philosophy as the original Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which began over 50 years ago. With the spirit of inclusion and opportunity, anyone can participate as a self-producer.
We feel that in the past, the self-produced process has been rushed.
To increase and improve the services that we provide we will be asking for your initial information and participation fees by April 23rd, 2004. We have also hired staff dedicated specifically to the Fringe. This will allow us to give more in-depth services and increase the number of workshops that we organize.
To participate as part of the Philly Fringe, make sure that you are on our mailing list and we will send you the appropriate participation form. Or you can download a PDF from this website or fill out the form online. If you fill out the form online, then you have an additional week to get us your participation fee and support materials.
We are excited about our trajectory of growth. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me at 215-413-9006 ext.13 or Deborah@pafringe.org.
